An Apprentice electrician license is valid for one year. TDLR (Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation) will send a reminder by email or postcard 60 days before the license expires. At that point, the apprentices must choose either to:
- Take four hours of continuing education, which you can find HERE, or
- Enroll in a department-registered electrical apprenticeship training course for license renewal.
The coursework must be completed within the term of the license or before the expiration of the license. Otherwise, it will cause late fees.

An apprentice electrician learns and assists in the installation of electrical work under the supervision of a master electrician, journeyman electrician, or residential wireman.
An apprentice electrical sign learns and assists in the installation of electrical sign work under the supervision of a master electrician, master sign electrician, or journeyman sign electrician.
Requirements:
- Minimum age Apprentice Electrician: sixteen
- Minimum age Apprentice Electrical Sign: eighteen
- Experience: none
- Temporary license: Apply online at TDLR’s website, valid for one year, no exam necessary.
- The temporary license is valid for one year.

Journeyman Electrician and Journeyman Electrician Sign Licenses
A journeyman electrician works under the general supervision of a master electrician or on behalf of an electrical contractor, while performing “Electrical Work” (installing, maintaining, or extending an electrical wiring system and the appurtenances, apparatus, or equipment used in connection with the use of electrical energy).
Journeyman Sign Electricians are licensed to perform electrical sign work while working under the general supervision of a Master Electrician or a Master Sign Electrician.
Requirements for license:
- Complete and document 8,000 hrs. of on-the-job training under supervision of a Master electrician.
- Apply for verification from TDLR and take an exam before completing the 8,000 hrs.
- Apply by mail for the initial license application
- The license is valid for one year.
How to renew the Journeyman Electrician and Journeyman Electrician Sign Licenses
Journeyman Electrician and Journeyman Electrician Sign License Renewal
A Journeyman electrician license is valid for one year. TDLR will send a reminder by email or postcard 60 days before the license expires.

Journeyman Industrial Electrician License
A Journeyman Industrial Electrician engages in electrical work exclusively at businesses that operate a chemical plant or plants from the gas and oil industry. This is a limited license and cannot be used to obtain a Master Electrician License.
Requirements for license:
- Complete and document 8,000 hours of on-the-job training as a licensed electrical apprentice under the supervision of a master electrician.
- Apply for verification from TDLR
- Pass the journeyman industrial electrician examination.
- Apply by mail for the initial license application.
- The license is valid for one year.
Journeyman Lineman License
A Journeyman Lineman electrical work involves the maintenance and operation of equipment that transmits and distributes electricity from the electricity’s original source to a substation for further distribution.
This is a limited license and cannot be used to obtain a Master Electrician License.
Requirements for license:
- Complete and document 7,000 hours of training in an apprenticeship program approved by the United States Department of Labor.
- Or 3 ½ years of experience as a journeyman lineman for an electric utility, electric cooperative, municipally owned utility, or electrical contractor in Texas.
- Apply for verification from TDLR.
- Pass the journeyman lineman examination.
- Apply by mail for the initial license application.
- The license is valid for one year.
